FP6 REGIONAL CONTACT POINT

The rationale of the successive framework programmes of the EU is to contribute to integration and to enhance cooperation and co-ordination networking teams among the good working groups. These concepts are relatively new for our country and are products of a new culture.

In this framework, being aware of the responsibility it bears as the oldest academic institution in the Aegean Region, the University of Ege has taken a regional initiative and it efforts to create synegy with the aim of achieving high-sounding activities in the EU programmes.

Each university in our region has numerious research teams specialized in different subjects or highly-qualified individual researchers. Considering the common points of the Western Anatolian universities and socio-economic and industiral facts of the region, it seems very well possible that significant projects can be realized in different thematic fields by joining forces. In this way, as well as the national benefits generated, we can have the chance to demonstrate abroad Turkey’s R&D potential.

To this end, the University of Ege, as being the host university, organized a special meeting on “the FP6 and the Role of Our Universities”. Representatives from 15 universities located in the Western Anatolian region, namely the Universities of Adnan Menderes, Akdeniz, Balıkesir, Celal Bayar, Dokuz Eylül, Dumlupınar, Kocatepe, Muğla, Onsekiz Mart, Pamukkale, Süleyman Demirel, İzmir Ekonomi, Yaşar and İzmir High Technology Institute, participated in this meeting. At the meeting, it was agreed that our universities and researchers must be well informed about the 6 th Framework Programme mechanisms, evaluation criteria and the project submission methods so that Turkey’s total contribution of about 250 million Euro for a 4-year-term could return to our country with the highest possible amount in the form of a project support.

The “6 th Framework Programme Coordination Office”, established by the University of Ege with the aim of providing regional service, performs the tasks listed below:

• Forwarding to the university and researchers from the industrial sector all the national developments and information and time scheduales related with the EU programmes,
• Taking the initiative for repeating the informative meetings organized in Ankara by the National Contact Point (namely TUBITAK),
• Providing assistance in project application and project execution processes and also in accounting or auditing issues,
• Announcing the advantages of the Western Anatolian universities that make them more attractive for the EU researchers seeking partners on different themes,
• Building up a data-base consisting of information about the researchers willing to participate in the EU programmes, in order to be a catalyst for the formation of a regional synergy.
